Booking Cheap Weekend TripsThe whole point of a base city is using it to see Europe on weekends, and it's shockingly cheap if you play it right. The two rules: book early, and know the budget-airline traps before they cost you.

Search, then book direct — Use Skyscanner to find the cheapest flights, then book on the airline's own website — it's often cheaper than the booking site and easier to manage.

Book early — Budget fares climb fast as the date approaches. Lock in your group's weekend trips a few weeks out (and check your exam dates first).

Respect budget-airline bag rules — Ryanair, easyJet, Vueling and Wizz are dirt cheap but ruthless on bag size and fees. Measure your bag, pay for the right size online (far cheaper than at the gate), and check in online beforehand.

Trains beat flights for nearby cities — For close destinations, trains go city-centre to city-centre with no airport hassle. Use the Trainline app; a rail pass like Eurail can pay off if you're travelling a lot.

Know the Schengen 90/180 rule — Most of Europe is one zone where US citizens get 90 days in any 180. Your student visa covers your host country — but watch the limit if you're travelling a lot outside it.

Back up everything — Photograph or scan your passport, visa, and cards and store them in your email/cloud. If your wallet or bag gets stolen, you'll be very glad you did.
